"I know you. You wrote a book about gliding. You were working in the Montange Noire.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Cesia looked at the man suspiciously, trying to determine what his motives were.
He glanced at her and then said to Jurek, “Your picture is in the book. That’s how I recognized you. We use your book to teach our scouts.”
“Really,” Jurek responded. “You are lucky. I don’t even have a copy.”
“You’re kidding!” the stranger said, extending his hand. “I’m Claude LaFontaine. I’m the president of the Scouts in this region. I have quite a few copies. I’ll go and get one for you. I’ll be back here in half an hour.”
“Thank you,” Jurek said, but Claude was already out of earshot.
Cesia leaned across the table. “That was scary! What if he’s with them? Why did you have to say who you are? You should have lied. We could be in trouble.”

Author of Let the Angels Keep You Safe
Matthew Illaszewicz outside of Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada

Matthew Illaszewicz is a natural storyteller and he knows a great story when he hears it. While at university in Ottawa, Canada, his Babcia (grandmother) would amaze him with her World War II adventures. He realized that everyone would enjoy hearing the story and that he was the person to write it.

After university, Mr. Illaszewicz took a job at a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio station in the Canadian Arctic. When he wasn’t telling other people’s stories, he began to capture the power and brilliance of Cesia Illaszewicz’s determined journey through hardships, starvation and near-death dramas. He skillfully portrays the enthusiasm and passion the protagonist had for her new husband, and their difficult voyage to North America.

This is Matthew Illaszewicz’s first novel. He continues to live in the Canadian Arctic and enjoys kite skiing across the ice and adventures on the land and water.
